The advent of the coronavirus pandemic certainly contributed to the emergence of phenomena of gender and domestic violence as well as aspects of gender inequalities. The #MeToo movement came late to Greece and it is certain that it took on great proportions due to the increase in domestic violence due to confinement at home.
Of course, the women’s movement was organized and developed several decades ago, especially after the Second World War when women left home and took part in activities that have always been a male stronghold as industrial workers in heavy industry.
But the patriarchal society is not a society of the past, it is of the present. And this is proved not only by the phenomena of sexual violence but also because the woman is still obliged to organize her life around family obligations, unlike what happens to the man.
We could paraphrase Karl Marx and say that a ghost hovers over the world, the ghost of patriarchy. Maybe the depictions of the three large Italian matchboxes may be aimed at this ghost.
On the representation of the matchbox it is written:
“My husband has taken a turn for the worse”
Piega literally means fold, dice.
On the representation of the matchbox it is written:
“I am waiting for you with anxiety”
On the representation of the matchbox it is written:
“I will dust you off”
